3/24/11: Flyers Pens Notes

Pittsburgh Penguins (4th in the East, 2nd in the Atlantic, 92 points)
at
Philadelphia Flyers (1st in the East, 1st in the Atlantic, 97 points)
7:00 EST from The Wells Fargo Center

-Storylines-

Banged Up
The Pens will be without Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin tonight, just as they have been for the past couple months. Malkin has been virtually shut down for the season and Crosby has been skating lightly lately but no timetable is set for a return. However the real story is how this team has been winning. Youth dominates this roster but the Pens hang their hat on a strong defensive corps and world-class goalie, Marc-Andre Fleury.

Division Battle
The Flyers and Penguins are one and two in the Atlantic Division with the Flyers holding a five point lead in the standings. As Jordan Staal said this week "it's a four point swing." Meaning that whoever wins will be getting a win tied on with their chaser's/chasee's loss. Both of these teams need these points.

Who's more Desperate?
The Flyers have been blowing late game leads like they know nothing else. This was the story on Tuesday's battle with the Caps. Now the Flyers have another chance to step out of their own grave and bury the Pens on home ice. In the opposite locker room, the Penguins are fighting for a playoff spot and chasing the Flyers for first in the Atlantic Division.

-Who To Watch-

The guy to watch on the Pens is Jordan Staal. He has yet to play against the Flyers this year and could go off tonight. He's been a model of consistency with points in 6 of the last 7 and has 5 goals against the Flyers in the past 2 years.

Switching it up, the guy to watch on the Flyers is Peter Laviolette. The Pens lack a top heavy lineup unlike what the Flyers are used to. Look forward to seeing how Lavy handles his lines and matchups. To pick a skater, Jeff Carter. He has been rolling and when he's playing like this is a burden for any matchup.

-Projected Line Combos-
